Civil society has long played a vital role in shaping how communities respond to the challenges of a changing world. As globalization, conflict, technology and shifting political landscapes threaten human welfare, civil society actors, formal and informal, can provide much needed voice, social innovation, and conduits to express important values. Among other things, civil society advocates human rights and democratic accountability, often stepping in where governments and markets fall short. In an era marked by opportunity and upheaval, civil society is a key resource.
